About Nerja

Nerja is the Costa del Sol's most easterly resort, 50 km from Malaga airport. Originally a sleepy fishing village it is now a thriving resort but has managed to retain much of its original character and charm. It is still at heart a Spanish village and the old part of the town has narrow, winding streets with whitewashed houses.

Most activity centres on the Balcon de Europa The avenue leading to it is lined with palm trees and benches and provides a shady respite from the hot sun and you will often see locals sitting around and chatting.

Built on the site of a 9th Century Moorish fortress the Balcon de Europa, in the heart of Nerja, is a beautiful viewing point overlooking the sea with spectacular views of cliffs all along the coastline and of the pretty coves and small beaches below. From here you can take a Horse and Carriage tour of the sites of Nerja which include the 17th Century El Salvador Church.

The world famous 'Alhambra Palace' a must see attraction. There is also a large market in Nerja every Tuesday.

Nerja Beaches

There are several beaches in Nerja, the largest being Burriana and Torrecilla, both of which have received the European Blue Flag Awards.

Enjoy traditional paella cooked in giant pans over log wood fires beachside day or night.

In between are a couple of quaint cove style beaches giving more privacy and are ideal for snorkelling.

Snorkelling and scuba diving are available at Burriana Beach.

Cueves de Nerja

However, Nerja's most spectacular attraction (These caves are Spain’s 3rd most visited tourist attraction) is undoubtedly its fascinating caves, located just three kilometres from the centre of town.

They include archaeological treasures such as paintings over 20,000 years old and other pre-historic remains. One of the enormous natural caverns has been transformed into a concert hall, where many performances are staged during the summer. This year Nerja is celebrating the 38th International Cave Festival, with the participation of many top international entertainers.
